"In wildness is the preservation of the world," wrote Henry David Thoreau in his essay Walking. It is wildness that offers the initiative and guidance as to how natural processes can be integrated into our social lives and built environments. Wildness, with ecological renewal and social justice as its allies, can broaden the range of choices for a more alive and fair future.

Wildness is at the heart of Reinhabit the Hudson Estuary’s mission – transforming the industrial into the bioregional by crafting creative and practical day-to-day activities with life-place awareness as a guide.

Reinhabit the Hudson Estuary strives to be the home for ideas and art in the service of reinhabitation: social cooperation woven into natural processes.

We need to shift our frame of reference to wild places as Thoreau understood them: as a landscape of sacred places and for enduring ethics; as home to native species and entire biotic communities; as a teacher for natural provision and regeneration. Wildness can become a reliable guide to human participation in natural systems so everyday activities are an occasion for community wide renewal. Let us cultivate it.
